Game as Gateway to Reading
Kids are reading less and less—especially boys. This game can work as a gateway to embrace a world of reading. We have heard from countless families who say their sons—some of whom are dyslexic—finally became avid readers after giving Green Ember a try. The game is aimed to welcome many more into a lifelong love of reading.
It's easy to complain... but we're doing something about it!

This is the best thing I’ve seen from a children’s author 👏 love that you’re giving parents this option for their children.

Not going to lie.. my eyes teared up just a bit when reading about the intentionality of creating this game for kids in a way that doesn’t seek to exploit and manipulate their minds into addiction! No ads, upgrades, etc. - I am SO in for supporting this!

Green Ember: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb FAQ
What is the recommended age for this game and book?
Like the rest of the Green Ember series, Green Ember: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb is ideal for the 8 - 12 year old independent reader. We often have older readers enjoy the Green Ember series, and it also delights whole families (including the younger crowd) as a read-aloud.
We expect the game to delight the same audience.
Do I have to read The Green Ember (any books) to understand this story?
Green Ember: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb serves as an excellent gateway into the the Green Ember world. You can start here! Of course, we hope you'll want to go on to the rest of the story.
Where does this book fit chronologically?
Green Ember: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb is Helmer's origin story and fits after Prince Lander and the Dragon War and before The Green Ember.
What platforms will the game be on?
For the initial release, the game will be available on Steam for both PC and Mac. Keep an eye on S. D. Smith's newsletter to be notified when mobile and Nintendo Switch versions are available.
Do I read the book or play the game first?
Either or! S. D. Smith wrote the book and the game at the same time so they would work hand-in-hand with one another. There are some minor differences due to the different storytelling mediums, but the game is intentionally designed as a videogamization of the novel. We've heard from some parents using the game as an incentive to play after they've read the book.

About the Author
S. D. Smith was born in West Virginia right before the Star Wars franchise released in 1977. Sam's missionary family moved to South Africa in 1989, and he turned thirteen there the day Nelson Mandela was released from prison. Sam later moved back to West Virginia, where he works full-time from his writer's shed, the Forge, creating soul-shaping, memory-making, darkness-shaking adventures for families. Sam and his wife of twenty-five years live with their four children in a hundred-year-old farmhouse in the country.

I love the idea of a video game that partners with a book to actually encourage more reading. My girls love to read, but my boys don’t get super excited about the prospect. When they can relate a book to something else (a movie, a video game, etc.) it really does encourage them to dive into the book in a new and exciting way. I love your heart behind creating this video game! This is such a fun endeavor.

My kids are so excited to continue this story. Like many, Helmer is a dearly loved character in our family. We are so excited to experience the new book, but also get to play it through the game. We are slowly adding video games to our life, but it is so hard to find positive games that inspire and encourage. I am so excited for a story line game that I know I don’t have to worry about what is included. Thank you Sam for the amazing stories you have brought to this world.

Although I am not the target audience for this project, I admit that I am super excited about this game. My family grew up playing casual games and it is one of the ways I connect with my brothers and my Dad, but I have lost interest in most modern games (see above reasons). I am grateful for SD Smith, his stories, his values, and Longtreader Games…and everyone who makes these noble endeavors possible!
